✦ The Lounge — Coffee ✦
The coffee certifications worth your money in 2026
There are dozens of 'barista certifications' online — most are not respected by hiring managers. These are the ones that actually move pay and open doors, plus the ones to skip.
Worth it: SCA (Specialty Coffee Association)
The global standard. Modular system: Barista Skills, Brewing, Sensory, Green Coffee, Roasting. Each has Foundation / Intermediate / Professional levels.
- Cost: $200–$600 per module/level
- Time: 1–3 days per level
- What it gets you: real respect at specialty cafés, +$1–$3/hr typical
- Recommended path: Barista Skills Intermediate first, then Brewing Intermediate
Worth it: Q-Grader (CQI)
The serious one. Q-Graders professionally evaluate coffee — required for roasters, importers, and any green coffee role. Difficult exam, ~$1,500–$2,500.
- Best for: people aiming at roastery, QC, or green-buying careers
- Lifts pay meaningfully ($60K → $90K+ range)
- Not necessary for café floor work
Worth it: BGA (Barista Guild of America)
Membership + workshops + community. Less about a single credential, more about access to senior baristas and competitions. ~$50/yr.
Skip: 'Online Barista Certificate' courses on Udemy / Coursera
These don't move offers. Hiring managers can spot them in 5 seconds. Spend the money on an in-person SCA Foundation instead.
Skip: Latte art 'mastery' courses
Latte art is taught at the bar, free, by working with experienced baristas. You don't need a $400 weekend course.
