How to get a coffee shop job with no experience
Cafés hire people with zero experience all the time — they just hire the right kind of no-experience person. This is the playbook used by hundreds of first-time baristas to get hired within 2 weeks.
What managers actually need
- Reliability — they've been burned by no-shows. Promise less, deliver more.
- Friendliness — can they leave you with a regular and trust you?
- Curiosity — will you ask questions and learn fast?
You don't need coffee experience. You need to signal these three things in 60 seconds.
Where to apply (in order)
- Independent cafés near where you live — walk in with a resume.
- Specialty cafés you actually visit — they prefer customers who become staff.
- Local chains (Blue Bottle, Stumptown, Intelligentsia) — apply online + walk in.
- National chains (Starbucks, Peet's) — strong training, easier to get hired with zero experience.
Skip Indeed for indie cafés
Most small cafés don't post jobs online — they hire from walk-ins or a sign in the window. Visit 5–8 cafés in your area between 2–4pm with a one-page resume.
The 60-second walk-in script
Hi — I drink here, I love the coffee, and I was wondering if you have any openings for a barista or counter help. I'm just starting out but I'm reliable and I'd love the chance to learn here.
Hand them the resume, smile, leave. Don't linger. If they're interested, they'll call within 48 hours.
What day one usually looks like
- Shadow a senior barista for 2–4 hours, no espresso yet
- Restock pastry case, wipe tables, learn the POS
- By end of week 1: making drip coffee + simple drinks
- By end of week 2: getting on espresso bar under supervision
- By end of month 1: solo bar on slow shifts
What you'll earn while you learn
Entry pay is usually $14–$17/hour + tips. Tips at a busy café often add $3–$8/hour — meaning a real take-home of $17–$25/hour even on day one. Within 6 months you should be on bar with a small raise.
